History of the .CA domain
The .CA domain extension was conceived in the heart of Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1987, Webnames.ca co-founder John Demco conceived and managed the .CA domain from his small office in the University of British Columbia.
For the next thirteen years, John Demco managed the .CA registry on a volunteer basis. Each .CA domain was registered manually for each Canadian, and before passing the stewardship of the .CA to CIRA, an impressive 100,000 domains had been registered.
Today, the .CA domain extension is a symbol of Canada's online presence that wouldn't have been possible without John's foresight and dedication to Canadians.
Who can register a .CA domain?
The only requirement to register a .CA domain name is that you need to be Canadian. This means that only Canadian citizens, businesses and entities can register a .CA domain. Visit our .CA FAQ page for more information.
