Resort becomes first Canadian municipality to host a .ca address
When the Resort Municipality of Whistler wanted to secure a uniquely Canadian Web presence, they looked to Webnames.ca to help them to make on-line information about their resort community a lot easier to access. Spokesperson for the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Diana Waltmann, said the .ca site allows residents in Whistler and visitors from around the world to easily find the site and access information about the services and events that Whistler is famous for.
She added the site will be developed into a community portal over the next couple of years, hopefully becoming the resort`s Internet focal point. There are a plethora of sites devoted to Whistler created by various businesses, particularly property rental companies, but until now accessing comprehensive information about Whistler was tough, Waltmann explained. ??We hope to eliminate any confusion and point visitors to the most appropriate Internet sites so they can access information they need quickly and easily, be it on Tourism Whistler`s site, the Whistler-Blackcomb site, or a hotel`s site.
Waltman added Whistler is consistently ranked the number one resort in North America, making it a very marketable property. This registration ensures the whistler.ca name is protected and won`t be misused.
It also makes the site easier to find. Until Whistler registered their municipality under .ca, the municipalitys site was hosted by Whistler.com, a separate tourist-oriented site aimed at attracting visitors to the resort.
Webnames.ca President Stephen Smith said he expects Whistler will be the first of many Canadian cities to register a .ca site.
Not only does hosting a .ca site improve a municipality`s Internet profile, it allows taxpayers and tourists easy access to important information, whether it be the latest council decision or a list of hotels and attractions. Smith said it also ensures the address won`t be purchased by a private individual and used for a purpose the city has no control over.
