Account Lock, Registrar Lock & Registry Lock Explained

Webnames’ domain and account lock services are designed to protect business critical domain names and domain portfolios from unauthorized transfers, deletions, or updates. Defend against internal and external threats, changes to nameservers, and internal tampering across three different levels: Account, Registry and Registrar.



Account Lock

Restrict control of your domain portfolio and access to your Webnames account to a single IP address, multiple IP addresses, or an approved IP address range.

Account Lock offers affordable protection for business accounts from password leak and unauthorized access when employees leave the organization, protecting not only your corporate domains, but all the services and personal information under your Webnames account.

Registry Lock

Enable a lock at the domain registry level (Verisign, CIRA, etc.) for stringent security. Like the registrar lock, registry locks are effective even if the security of your account is compromised. No attributes of the domain can be altered without coordinated action by both the registrar and registry.

For the lock to be disabled, an authorized registrar (Webnames) representative must work directly with the Registry Operator, completing a rigorous offline multi-step authentication process.

Even if you lose control of your Webnames account, domain transfers and updates cannot be performed without completing this verification process.

Account Lock + Registrar Lock + Registry Lock

For enterprises, government and businesses with high-traffic websites, or that face significant revenue and reputational risk if their website or DNS- dependent applications become compromised, a combined lock approach is the best threat prevention approach.

Layering registry lock, registrar lock, and account lock prevents a single point of failure by requiring not only an approved IP-address for account-level access, but rigorous, manual validation of registrant credentials by both the registrar and registry before any attributes of the domain can be changed.

There are several ways to improve domain security, domain locks being some of the most effective. Domain locks behave as additional layers of security to prevent unauthorized access or changes to your domain names or account. Domain locks protect against security risks that other domain security services do not. Domain locks offer protection against domain hijacking, unauthorized transfers or deletions, updates to registrant or contact information and other forms of potential tampering

While all three locks defend against similar threats, they each offer differing levels of security.

Account locks restrict access to your account to a single IP address or range of IP address — for example, the IP address associated with a corporate head office or IT administrators home Account lock protects not only your domains from threats external to your organization, but all of the services under your Webnames account.

Registrar locks enable domain locks at the registrar level (Webnames in this instance). Registrar lock can only be disabled through a manual authentication process that requires action by the domain owner and Webnames.

Registry locks are among the most powerful mechanisms available to secure high priority domains. A registry lock cannot be removed by a customer or Webnames staff, only by the registry operator through a two-stage manual authentication process that requires coordination and passphrase confirmation between the registry and registrar.

Multiple locks used together are the most effective way to prevent a range of threats to business-critical domains across different threat surfaces. Proactive protection of key domains can prevent a more expensive recovery in the event of a successful domain hijacking attempt or unauthorized transfer. Multiple domain locks should be used by high-traffic and high-profile websites that are typically the target of bad actors and cyber criminals, including: corporations, financial institutions, government bodies and agencies; hospitals; ecommerce companies; or any business that deals in consumer or personal data.
