IP Pointing

IP pointing enables you to point your domain name to a specific static IP address (your IP address remains the same every time you go on the internet). For example, if your website is currently reached by entering an IP address as the website address (e.g. 123.123.123.1) use IP pointing so visitors to your website will see the domain name and the file name of the page they are on (eg. your-domain.ca/index.html) instead of the IP address and file name (123.123.123.1/index.html).

Benefits of Domain Pointing include:

  • If you currently have a static IP address, IP pointing allows you to enter that IP address and run your own services/servers on your computer using your domain name. You can run any services you wish, such as a webserver, mailserver, and/or FTP server, and refer to them using your domain name instead of your IP address.
  • Both your-domain.ca and www.your-domain.ca are pointed to the static IP address you specify
  • The address in the browser will identify the page being displayed, using your domain and the file name - http://www.your-domain.ca/page1.html
  • Visitors can target specific pages in a site using your domain. For example, they could enter http://www.your-domain.ca/pricing.html and be taken directly to the pricing.html page in your site.

How to apply IP Pointing:

  1. New Domains: Select the "DNS Advantage" option at the time of registration for new domain registrations.
  2. Existing DomainsLog into your account and select "DNS Advantage" for your domain under "websettings". Pay a flat fee of $5 per year and all you need to do is provide us with the IP address you want your domain to be pointed to.
