Overview
Once the SSL Certificate
SSL Certificates are created for a particular server and domain, and are issued by trusted, third-party Certificate Authority (CA) - comparable to your passport. As the Certification Authority, the SSL Certificate vendor authenticates the identity of the purchaser and verifies the business that owns the domain. configuration data has been submitted to the certificate Vendor, the Vendor will validate the domain, the control thereof, and optionally the business identity, depending on the type of SSL SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer. It is used for securely transmitting data via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Many websites, including those that utilize ecommerce or facilitate banking transactions use the protocol to transmit confidential user information, such as credit card numbers.
By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http: Certificate being purchased.
SSL Certificate Validation can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several days. Each type of Certificate has its own validation process and timeline. The thoroughness of the validation process is one of the primary differences between all SSL Certificates. SSL Certificates which are quickly validated and issued, will be done so via carefully monitored automated processes, while the Certificates requiring more time for validation will be manually audited by a Security Analyst. The applicant will also be asked to supply additional documentation as part of the validation process.
To maintain the integrity and security of the validation process, as well as to prevent exploits, the exact validation process and requirements for each Certificate type are never disclosed.
