.CA domains feature a 30 day Renewal Grace Period, which begins as of the domain expiration date. During this time the domain can be renewed as per a normal renewal process, and can be done so without penalty.
.CA domains also feature a 30 day Redemption Period, which begins at the conclusion of the Renewal Grace Period. There is an additional penalty fee imposed by the Registry A domain name registry is a database of all domain names registered in a top-level domain. A registry operator, also called a network information center (NIC), is the part of the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet that keeps the database of domain names, and generates the zone files which convert domain names to IP addresses. to reactivate and renew a domain which is within it's Redemption Period.
Should the end of the redemption period be reached, the domain cannot be renewed. Such domains will be put onto CIRA's To-Be-Released (TBR) list, and made available through that process.
Domains that are not awarded via the TBR process will be made available to the public and can be acquired as a new domain registration.
