Email Forwarding and SElf-Managed DNS
If the domain being used with your email forwarding is NOT parked or forwarded with Webnames, then you will need to update the DNS records for your domain and email so that the two are connected. This record will direct email addressed to your domain to our mail servers, which we will in turn, deliver to you.
This DNS record is updated via one of the following, depending on your domain's configuration:
- Domains using name servers from another provider: Apply the DNS record shown below to those name servers. You can determine who is providing the name servers for your domain via a WHOIS lookup.
- Domains using Webnames Website Hosting: Apply the DNS record shown below the to DNS section of your Plesk Control Panel . Replace any existing MX records to avoid mail routing issues
- Domains using Webnames DNS Hosting: Apply the DNS record shown below the to your DNS Admin interface. Replace any existing MX record, and add the remaining three records.
TYPE | HOST NAME | DESTINATION HOST NAME | PRIORITY |
---|---|---|---|
MX | yourdomain.ca | smtp4.webnames.ca | 10 |
Prior to making these DNS changes, we recommend first lowering your TTL Time to live (TTL) is a mechanism that limits the lifespan of data in a computer or network. Shorter TTLs can cause heavier loads on an authoritative nameserver, but can be useful when changing the address of critical services like Web servers or MX records, and therefore are often lowered by the DNS administrator prior to a service being moved, in order to minimize disruptions. value to 5 minutes and allowing that change to propagate. Once the new TTL value has propagated, any future DNS changes should only take 5 minutes to propagate.
Once all DNS changes have been made, propagated and verified, the TTL value can be changed back to its previous value.
