Transferring to another Registrar

While we hate to see anyone move a domain away from us, we do understand that this may be occasionally necessary.

If there has ever been a deficiency in our products or service, please let us know! We would love the opportunity to retain your business.

You can obtain your transfer authentication code as well as unlock your domain by browsing to the following, once logged into your Webnames.ca account:

Proceed through the screens to obtain your Transfer Authorization Code and Unlock your domain.

A new Transfer Authorization Code will be generated each time one is requested, and this Code will be updated after 90 days, provided a transfer of the domain is not currently in progress.

NOTE: Please be aware that each domain Registry imposes a restriction on how frequently a domain can be transferred between Registrars. Typically this frequency is every 60 calendar days.

Outside of the above conditions, customer auth code requests result in an automated email going to Support. A team member will then contact the customer and attempt to retain their business by addressing whatever factors are contributing to the customer's desire to leave.

Staff Auth Code Issuance

When providing a customer a transfer auth code for a domain, it is preferable to do so by proceeding through the same flow/process as the customer would have within their account. This process, vs. using the tools in the HelpDesk has the following advantages:

Not all registries supply auth codes. Rather, in order to know what an auth code is, it must be reset. (In a similar line of logic as performing a password reset: The only way to 'know' what a password is is to be the one that reset it)

The in-account process of obtaining an auth code actually performs an auth code reset.

We routinely rotate/reset all auth codes every 90 days. It is not possible to determine where in the 90-day period a current auth code is. Therefore, if providing an auth code to a customer via the HelpDesk, the code could be reset (and the domain re-locked) before the customer has a chance to actually transfer the domain.

Conversely, by obtaining an auth code from within the customer's account, the both the code is reset as well as the 90-day countdown, thus ensuring that the code will correct AND that it will not be rotated within the next 90 days.
