This page provides links to a set of step by step instructions for how to accomplish basic and complex operations on the Webnames.ca web site.
Index of "How to..." links
- How do I get a Webnames.ca account?
If you don't already have Webnames.ca account, one will be created for you when you register your first domain name. It isn't necessary to create a Webnames.ca account seperately.
- How do I log into my Webnames.ca account?
To log into your Webnames.ca account, click the "My Account" menu item. If you are not already logged into an account, you will be automatically redirected to the page.
On the "Account Login" page, enter your Webnames.ca username and password, then click the "Continue" button.
It is a good idea to log into your Webnames.ca account as soon as you arrive at the Webnames.ca web site. You will find that most functions, including new registrations, work much more easily if you are already logged in.
For security reasons, please remember to log out or close your browser window, when you have finished on the Webnames.ca web site.
- How can I get a reminder for my Webnames.ca password?
You can have a reminder for your Webnames.ca password sent to you by e-mail by clicking the "My Account" link in the menu.
If you are not currently logged in, you will be automatically directed to the Login page.
At the bottom of the Login page you will see a section called "Forgotten your account login details?".
Simply enter one of domain names in the field provided and we will send your account details to the e-mail address of the account holder (normally the same as the Administrative contact).
- How do I change my Webnames.ca username and password?
You can change your Webnames.ca username and password as often as you like. To change this information:
- Log into your Webnames.ca account
- Click the "change Account details" menu item to display your account details.
- Enter your new username and/or password. (For password changes, you must confirm your password).
- Click the "Update" button.
- When you see the confirmation screen, click continue.
If you enter an invalid username or password, you will see an error message. Simply repeat the steps above to correct the error.
NOTES:
- Choose a good password. Don't use proper names. Use a combination of letters, numbers and non-alphanumeric characters. Your password must be between 6 and 12 characters long.
- Webnames.ca usernames and passwords are NOT case sensitive. "myAcCoUnT" is the same as "myaccount".
- You may NOT use the following characters in either your username or password: Space, ', ", &, =, #, ?
- How do I store/change/get a reminder for my CIRA password?
Your CIRA account number and password are NOT the same as your Webnames.ca username and password.
Your CIRA account number and password are required when doing critical updates (such as changing administrative contact information or transferring a domain name).
CIRA only sends your password to you. Webnames.ca does not receive a copy. You cannot change your CIRA account number or password.
Webnames.ca provides two features to help you with your CIRA password:
- Firstly we provide a convenient place to store your password with your registrant information.
- Secondly, we provide a CIRA password reminder link that causes CIRA to send your account number and password to the administrative contact.
Both of these features are available from the "Edit Registrant Information" page:
- Log into your Webnames.ca account.
- Select "list domains" from the left-hand menu.
- Open the "List by Registrant" tab and click the appropriate Registrant name.
- Open the "CIRA information for .CA" tab.
- Enter your CIRA user account number and CIRA password and click the "Store CIRA Username and Password" button, if you want to keep your CIRA password in a convenient place.
- Click the link at the bottom of this section to have your CIRA user account number and password e-mailed to the administrative contact for this registrant.
- How do I view/edit domain information?
The "Domain Details" page allows you to view and edit your domain name information. To access the "Domain Details" page:
- Log into your Webnames.ca account.
- From the "View registrant & domain list", click the domain name to view or edit.
- The "Domain Details" page shows the domain information organised into 'drawers'.
- To open a drawer, click the "Open" button on the right hand side.
- Click the "Update" button inside any drawer to save changes. Close the drawer or leave the page without clicking the "Update" button to abandon unwanted changes.
The "Domain Information" drawer enables you to change the status of whether the domain name refers to a Canadian registered Trademark.
You can also renew or increase the term your domain registration from this drawer (more information about term extensions is provided in another link in the "How to... index").
The "Web Settings" drawer allows you to set what happens when someone visits your web site. Details about Web Settings can be found under the "Value Added Services" menu.
- How do I view/edit registrant information?
The "Registrant Details" page allows you to view and edit registrant information, including administrative, technical and billing contacts. To access the "Registrant Details" page:
- Log into your Webnames.ca account.
- From the "View registrant & domain list", click the registrant name to view or edit.
- The "Registrant Details" page shows the domain information organised into 'drawers'.
- To open a drawer, click the "Open" button on the right hand side.
- Click the "Update" button inside any drawer to save changes. Close the drawer or leave the page without clicking the "Update" button to abandon unwanted changes.
The "Registrant" drawer allows you to change registrant type, registrant description and whether the registrant has CIRA membership. This drawer also contains a convenient space to store your CIRA password and a link to receive an e-mail reminder of your CIRA password.
The administrative, technical and billing contact drawers allow you to make changes to these records. If you originally stated that the technical and/or billing contact were the same as the administrative contact, this will be reflected in the display under each drawer.
If you want to create a separate technical or billing contact, click the "New Contact" link in the appropriate drawer and fill in the new contact information.
The "Domain" drawer displays all the domains that 'belong' to this registrant. Each is a link to the "Domain Details" page for that domain.
NOTE: Any changes to registrant information affects all domains that belong to that registrant.
- How can I manage all my domains and registrants from a single login?
To make sure you only ever need one Webnames.ca account, always log into your account before starting a new registration. This way, all new domains will be added to your existing account. Even if you want to create a new registrant, the registrant will be added to your Webnames.ca account (see "Site Orientation").
For customers who may already have more than one Webnames.ca account, the instructions that follow explain how to consolidate all of your registrants and all domain names under a single account:
- Decide which account you want to keep as your 'master' account. Once an account's information has been imported, the imported account is deleted.
- log into the account you want to keep as your 'master' account.
- Click the "import accounts" menu item under the menu.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully. If it is NOT correct, click "Cancel", otherwise click the "Continue" button to complete the import.
- After import you will see the imported domain name(s) and registrant listed in the "Domain and Registrant List"
NOTES:
- You CAN import imported account. For example, you can import accounts B, C, and D into account A, then import account A into account Z.
- You CANNOT import an affiliate account.
- You CANNOT import a corporate account.
- How do I extend the registration term for a domain name (renew a domain name registration)?
To renew or extend your domain name registration period:
- Log into your Webnames account.
- Select the domain name you want to renew/extend from the "renew domains".
- Select the additional length of term you want.
- Complete the payment process.
NOTES:
- The maximum length of term for a renewed domain is 11 years. If you have already registered a domain name for 5 years, you will only be presented with options to extend up to 6 years.
At Webnames.ca, we strive to create a powerful, but easy to use interface for domain registration and management. If you would like to see a particular "How to..." feature listed here, why not e-mail us a suggestion, and we will do our best to include it in the near future.
