What is domain privacy?
As required by the domain name registries, every time you register a domain name, your name, address, phone number and email address are listed in a public Whois database.
Webnames Privacy Service allows you to update your WHOIS record with non-personal information. When Privacy is enabled, the Administrative, Billing and Technical sections of your WHOIS record are replaced with generic Webnames Services Inc. contact information.
-
Do I retain control of my domain?
Absolutely. You retain ownership and full control of your domain.
-
Which domain extensions can I use Webnames Privacy with?
Webnames Privacy service is among the most comprehensive privacy service available in the industry. It can be applied to.CA, .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO, .CN, .MOBI, .ASIA.
Privacy cannot be applied to .US as it is prohibited by the US Department of Commerce.
-
Do I have to submit my actual contact information to Webnames.ca?
Yes, this is a requirement for domain registration. However, if you purchase the privacy service, this information will not be published on the public WHOIS.
-
How much does the privacy service cost?
$10CDN per domain name per year.
-
What are the benefits of using Webnames Privacy service?
- Protect yourself from spam, telemarketers, identity & domain theft. Webnames Privacy blocks more spam than any other privacy service available. See for more info.
- Unlike other privacy services which only gives you an email alias which spammers use to continue to send you email, with Webnames Privacy, you receive *official correspondence only
- Most comprehensive privacy service in the industry - available for most domain extensions (.ca, .com, .net, .org, .info, .mobi, biz, .cn, .asia)
- Retain ownership and complete control of your domain
*official correspondence includes all correspondence as required by Webnames.ca to deliver as a Registrar and in provision of other services
-
If I register a domain name with privacy, will I be listed as the registrant for the domain in the WHOIS?
Only non-individual registrants of .ca domain names will have their registrant name listed in the .CA WHOIS. There is no way to avoid this, except through a registrant transfer, which changes the ownership of the domain name.
For all other extensions (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .asia, .cn, .mobi) the registrant name will not be shown in the WHOIS.
-
Who is considered an individual registrant of a .ca domain name according to CIRA?
- a Canadian citizen
- a permanent resident of Canada
- an Aboriginal person
- an executor, administrator or other legal representative of a person (Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
-
What happens to my private email address if I transfer my domain name to another registrar?
When a domain name with privacy transfers away from Webnames.ca, the private email address will be disabled. The owner of the domain name must change the email address or disable privacy before initiating the transfer.
-
For domains other than .CA, if Webnames Privacy is listed as the registrant of my domain, does this mean I no longer own the domain name?
No, you are still the owner of the domain name. Webnames Privacy is appearing as the organizational contact, not the actual registrant.
-
How do I cancel the Webnames Privacy service?
To cancel this service, you must log into your Webnames.ca account. Select the registrant that you would like to cancel the service for. This will disable privacy for all domains belonging to that registrant.
Please note that there are no refunds for cancellation of the privacy service.
-
Will I be notified when it is time to renew my Webnames Privacy service?
There is no need to renew the privacy service since it is correlated with your domain renewal. When the domain renews, so will the privacy for that domain.
-
Once Privacy is enabled on my domain name, how long does it take to have the WHOIS updated?
We submit your new information to the WHOIS immediately. It normally takes 12 – 24 hours for the WHOIS database to be updated. In the case of registrants that are active at CIRA (i.e. if the domains affected are .ca's) the registrant will need to log into their CIRA account and approve the change before it takes effect in the WHOIS.
-
Will Webnames.ca ever reveal my actual contact information?
Actual contact information will only be revealed if required by court order.
Where there is a breach of our terms and conditions, Webnames.ca reserves the right to terminate the Webnames Privacy Service.
-
How do I contact someone who has Webnames Privacy Service enabled?
If you try to email the email address listed on the WHOIS for a Webnames Privacy Customer, your email will bounce. You must pay a $10 processing fee, complete the
form, fax it to 604-633-3174 and receive approval before your email will be forwarded to the administrative contact we have on file.
This process and the fee paid does not guarantee that the Webnames Privacy Customer will read or respond to your request.
-
Will I still get spam (unsolicited email)?
Unlike other services which continue to forward emails to you (they just don’t display your real email address), Webnames Privacy blocks all emails to the administrative contact email address, except official correspondence as required by Webnames.ca to deliver as a Registrar and in provision of other services.
We will also forward to you correspondence from those who pay a $10 processing fee and complete a detailed request form.
Note however, prior to you enabling Webnames Privacy that any information previously available in the WHOIS may have been collected by spammers who may continue to use this information.
-
I am an “individual” as defined by CIRA and qualify under CIRA’s WHOIS privacy policy. Would I still need to purchase Webnames Privacy?
CIRA has an online process which anyone can use to send correspondence to you even though your actual contact information is not listed on the CIRA WHOIS. If you continue to receive a lot of unsolicited mail, you may wish to purchase the Webnames Privacy service for an extra layer of protetion.
-
What is CWA (Change without approval) Authority and why am I asked to confirm this at CIRA when I purchase Webnames Privacy for my .CA domain names?
For a .CA Registrant, each time you make a change to the administrative contact details, you must confirm the change by logging into the CIRA website. By enabling CWA it will give Webnames.ca the authority to update your contact information to the Webnames Privacy contact information without you needing to confirm it with CIRA each time in the future.
-
When buying an SSL certificate, how will my Privacy Service affect my ability to configure my SSL ?
Certificate authorities use the WHOIS to validate the legitimate holder of a domain name during the configuration process of your SSL. Webnames Privacy has a process to coordinate your SSL configuration and Privacy Service.
-
How will Webnames Privacy work with my .Asia domains so that I continue to meet the Registry's Asian presence requirements?
You will need to delegate Webnames Asia as your CED contact and we will use Webnames Asia as your technical contact. Webnames Services Inc. will be used as your administrative contact. This way you will have complete anonymity while continuing to be in compliance with the Asian presence requirements. Many of you are already using Webnames Asia as your CED contact so there will be no additional charge. For those who are currently using their own Asian contact information, there is an additional charge of CAD$9.95 per year to use Webnames Asia as the CED contact.
-
Can I apply Webnames Privacy to only some of the domains under one Registrant and not to other domains?
If you are an "individual" i.e. your registrant type under .CA rules is Canadian citizen, permanent resident, legal representative or aboriginal person - The privacy service for individuals is applied at the registrant level and therefore, you will be charged for all domains, excluding .US. For .CA domains, you may choose to enable or disable privacy.
This means that if an individual registrant has 2 .coms, 2.nets and 2.ca domains, you will be charged for the .com and .net domains, but have the option to choose privacy on the .ca domains (since CIRA provides a level of privacy for individual .ca's). If you choose Yes for the .ca, privacy is applied to ALL the .ca’s under that registrant or if NO, privacy will not be applied to ALL the .ca’s under that registrant.
If you are a "non-individual" i.e. corporation or other legal types - The privacy service for non-individuals is applied at the registrant level and you will be charged for all domains, excluding .US.
This means that if a company registrant has 2 .coms, 2.nets and 2.ca domains, you will be charged for all domains.
In order to have some domains with privacy and some without, you will have to separate these domains into different Registrants by completing a Registrant Transfer.
-
If I enable privacy for a .CA domain name, do I have to confirm the change with CIRA?
Once you enable Webnames Privacy service for a .CA domain name you will have to confirm the change with CIRA, the .CA registry. There will be an email sent from CIRA to your previous administrative contact email address with a link to the confirmation page. Once the changes have been confirmed, the new private information will appear on the WHOIS.
-
What if I have .ca domain names at another registrar under the same CIRA registrant to which I am applying privacy?
The administrative and technical contact information will be made private for all .ca domains under the registrant regardless of which registrar they are with. Consequently, the adminstrative contact will receive correspondence from CIRA (for instance, regarding renewal notices) but will not receive e-mail correspondence from their other registrar. We recommend consolidating all domains that are under one CIRA registrant with Webnames.ca to ensure all registrar correspondence is properly received.

Ongoing Registration
Ongoing registration requests will be submitted for live registration once the registry fully opens, in the order they were received.
The only exceptions are:
The domain has already been successfully registered during the sunrise period.
The domain has already been successfully registered during land rush.
-
What is the .asia Charter Eligibility Requirement?
Charter Eligibility Requirement is the basic requirement to register a .ASIA domain name. The Charter Eligibility Requirement makes a legal entity in one of the eligible ICANN-designated Asia/Pacific countries a prerequisite for .asia registration. This legal entity is called the Charter Eligibility Declaration contact, or CED contact.
More:
http://www.dotasia.org/policies/DotAsia-Charter-Eligibility--COMPLETE-2007-08-15.pdf
-
What is Charter Eligibility Declaration Contact?
The CED Contact is not an additional contact, but a legal entity designated to make the Charter Eligibility Declaration.
The CED contact may be a natural person or a juristic entity (such as a corporation). A natural person can be a person with an Asian passport or citizenship ID but does not necessarily have to be living in Asia. A juristic entity can consist of a corporation, companies, cooperatives, partnerships, collectives, government bodies, states, sovereigns, municipalities, political parties, trade unions, trusts, estates, associations, societies or institutions.
The registrant must specify which contact to be listed as the CED Contact;
Additional information must also be provided, these included:
- Locality of the claimed Legal Entity status
- Type of Legal Entity
- Form of Identification
- Identification Number / Code of Reference
- Other remarks
-
What is the responsibility of the Charter Eligibility Declaration Contact (CED Contact)?
In the case where the CED contact is not the registrant, the CED contact and registrant will be jointly accountable for the domain registration, responsible for responding to dispute resolution proceedings and jointly be defined as the Registered Name Holder. Nevertheless, the Registrant (Registrant Contact) will remain the "operating contact" for a domain, including for domain transfers and the reappointment of a CED Contact for a domain.
-

-
What is the term of registration and renewal?
The term of registration during Sunrise and Landrush is 2-10 years. The term of registration and renewal is 1-10 years starting from Go Live.
-
What is the minimum/maximum length for a .asia domain name?
The registry requires a minimum of 3 characters. The maximum permitted is 63 characters.
-
How can I maximize my chances of successfully registering my .asia domain?
Register for the landrush period — this gives you a head start to help you beat the competition and secure your domain or take part in the auction.
-
What happens if there is more than one applicant for the same domain name?
Applications received during the landrush period will be treated as received at the same time. If there is only one applicant for a domain, it will be allocated to the applicant.
If there is more than one applicant for the same domain name, all applicants will be invited to bid for that domain in an auction. The highest bidder will get the domain name. Auctions start after the end date of the landrush period (March 12, 2008). You will be notified through email if you are entered in an auction.
Applications received during the Go-Live general registration period, beginning March 26, 2008, will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
What is the auction style?
The .asia auctions use an English-style auction. This simply means that the highest bidder will receive the domain name.
-
What type of bidding is allowed, and is there an automated auction in place?
There are two types of bidding:
- Manual Bidding
Manual bidding requires you to monitor the auction. You submit your bid, and if someone outbids you, you will receive an email notification. You have 24 hours to submit a new bid to maintain the status as the highest bidder.
- b) Automated Bidding (Proxy Bidding)
If you prefer not to constantly monitor the bidding process, you may choose to use the automated bidding function. This means that every time someone outbids you, the system will automatically enter a bid for you — at least one increment higher than the current bid. You may also set any increment amount you may wish, as long as it is higher than the registry’s minimum amount. To prevent yourself from paying too much, you are able to set a maximum bid amount — which stops the system from automatically entering the bid for you.
Should your maximum amount be outbid, you have the opportunity to increase your maximum or leave the system as is. If you choose to leave the system as is, you will no longer have the opportunity to win the auction.
-
How long does the auction run?
The auction is set to run for an initial period of seven days. For example, if the auction starts on Monday, the auction will end on the following Monday. Please note auctions will be scheduled to start on business days (Monday through Friday).
If there is a bid for an auction on the seventh day, the auction will continue to run beyond the initial seven days. An auction can only close when there has not been a change in the bid for 24 hours. This ensures that bidders from all time zones around the world have the opportunity to respond to an outbid message before the auction close.
Likewise, if there has not been a change in the auction for your domain name for 24 hours, the auction will close — even if the auction only lasts a couple of days.
-
How will I be notified that I have been entered into an auction?
Once the auction is scheduled, you will receive a notification at least 10 days in advance of the auction start. The notification will be sent to the email address you designate as your OPN (Operations and Notification) contact. This email will contain your login information for your .asia auction account at Pool.com, the auction provider. You will be able to monitor your auction through this system. Throughout the auction process, you will also receive emails for auction start, auction outbid, auction lost and auction paid.
-
What is the minimum bid?
As the auction progresses, the minimum bid will be the leading bid plus the incremental bid. For example, if the leading bid is $50 and the incremental bid is $10, the minimum bid you need to place is $60.
All auctions start at $0. Make sure you put in your bid then!
-
What happens if I am outbid?
You will receive an email from Pool.com, the auction provider for .asia, notifying you that you have been outbid. To see what the leading bid is, log back into your .asia auction account, refresh your screen, and you will be able to see the leading bid. Make sure you enter a higher bid to ensure that you don’t lose out!
-
How many participants will take place in the auction?
In order for an auction to take place, there must be a minimum of two participants. There is not a maximum number of participants.
-
What happens if there are no bidders?
The registry has two options: reschedule the auction or defer the release of this domain name. Make sure you bid for your domain name; otherwise someone else may bid at the last minute, and you’ll lose your domain name.
-
What happens if there is more than one applicant for the same domain name?
This action is up to the registry, and not up to Webnames.ca.
The registry may:
- Award the domain name to the next highest bidder
- Re-auction the domain name
- Choose a different course of action
To prevent loss of a domain name you rightfully won, Webnames.ca highly recommends that you make your payment on time.

Why did I receive an email from Pool.com regarding my .asia domain name?
The registry uses Pool’s auction platform to run .asia auctions. You will receive notifications from Pool regarding auction start, auction outbid, and auction invoice.
-
What if I did not submit an application, and I want to bid in the auction?
All auction participants must submit an application for their domain through Webnames.ca in order to be able to participate in the auction. This is particularly critical for sunrise applicants.
Once you are past the end date for your sunrise phase, you are no longer able to submit your application for that particular sunrise period. You will have to wait for the next applicable period or participate in the land rush period.
If you have a trademark or organization, we strongly encourage you to submit your application ahead of time to ensure you do not miss the end date. Your best chance of successfully registering a .asia domain name only comes once.
-
How will I know if my preregistrations are successfully converted into live registrations?
You will be kept informed of your application status via email.
You will receive an email:
- Prior to the launch of each registration period
- If your application is successful
- When your domain name has been activated
- If you have been entered into an auction
- If your application is unsuccessful
You can log into your Webnames.ca Account // Call Webnames.ca Support at 1.866.221.7878 to check the status of your application
-
How much does registering a .asia domain cost?
.Asia registration fees are as follows:

(Note: you will only be changed if you are allotted the domain name)
Local Presence Fee: $9.95 USD per domain name per year.
-
What about charges, cancellations and refunds?
Charges: The local presence service fee is charged only if your domain name is successfully registered.
Refunds: Refunds will not be issued for local presence service purchases. Refunds will be issued if cancellations are received before your application is submitted to the registry

The objective of premium names is to create a more leveled playing field in the allocation of these names; increase the likelihood that these domain names would more promptly provide the mobile community with new features and services; optimize the user experience; and preserve the stability and security of registry operations.
There is no set date for when the names will be made available. However, it will likely not be until after the general launch, most likely beginning in the fourth quarter of 2006. However, any final date will be announced in advance along with a final list of Premium Names and proposed allocation mechanisms.

What is SSL?
SSL stands for Short for Secure Sockets Layer. It is used for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:
-
What is an SSL certificate?

Why do I get an "Invalid CSR" error when submitting an order?
There are a number or reasons why a CSR will be rejected by our ordering page. Listed below are some of the most common reasons a CSR might be rejected.
-
The common name contained in the CSR is not a fully qualified domain name. Make sure when you generate your CSR it contains the fully qualified domain name of the site that you are trying to secure (i.e. the domain name that would be displayed in the URL of the site you are trying to secure such as www.webnames.ca).
-
If the CSR was generated on an Apache server, an optional challenge password may have been entered. When generating the CSR makes sure you leave the challenge password blank.
- There are illegal characters in one of the fields of the CSR. Make sure the following characters are not in any of the fields in the CSR: < > ~ ! @ # $ % ^ * / \ ( ) ?.,&. Also international characters will usually cause a problem.
- Entire CSR is not entered into the form. Make sure that you include the entire CSR when pasting it into the form, this includes everything from the first 5 dashes before BEGIN NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST through the last 5 dashes after END NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST.
If you have checked all of the these problems and you are still not able to submit your CSR please feel free to contact us at 1-866-221-7878 or by email support@webnames.ca.

If I renew a certificate early will I lose any validity period?
No, if a Geotrust certificate is renewed early, we will honor the remaining validity period and add it to the life of the new certificate issued from Geotrust. Your certificate can be renewed up to 90 days before the expiry date.
The duration of a certificate begins when it is created (not from the date when your previous cert expires). Our early-renewal policy is designed to make sure you don’t lose any time from your current certificate. Therefore, if you renew early, you do not lose any time on your certificate’s validity period.
-
What is a Wildcard certificate?
A wildcard certificate may be used for situations where several same-domain web sites need to be secured but the hostnames or sub-domains vary. Per our certificate licensing agreement, you can secure as many sub-domains on one physical box as you would like with the wildcard product as long as they share the same second level domain name. In order for you to do this, the domain/common name in the CSR would need to be "*.mydomain.com". The asterisk is a place holder and enables you to secure different sub-domains that share the same base/second level domain name such as "mydomain.com" in our example. If you need to secure sub-domains on multiple boxes, you will need to purchase separate wildcards for each box. Here is an example of sub-domains with the same second level domain:
www.mydomain.com
w1.mydomain.com
secure.mydomain.com
test.mydomain.com
trash.mydomain.com
All of these have the same second level domain "mydomain.com" but different hostnames. One wildcard certificate of the form " *.mydomain.com " could serve all these web sites.
The wildcard is really useful in situations like that above or when the web hosting service puts customer branding as the host name but all of them will have the same domain. For example: A Web Hosting Service offers its Fortune 500 clients a convenient shopping mydomain cart with their own brand name:
cnn.mydomain.com
pepsi.mydomain.com
fordmotorcompany.mydomain.com
amazon.mydomain.com
fedex.mydomain.com
compusa.mydomain.com
jspennys.mydomain.com
sears.mydomain.com
All of these individualized web sites can be secured with the one and same wildcard of the form:
*. mydomain.com
Wildcards can also have more than three fields, such as:
* . * . domain . com
* . * . * . * . *. domain . com
etc.
But, if you get a 5-field wildcard, then it only works for 5-field web sites.
If you are running IIS 5.0, you cannot get a multi-asterisk wildcard but you can get a single asterisk wildcard.
-

What are Geotrust Site Seals?
GeoTrust's site seals are an effective way to make sure your customers know your site has the stamp of approval from a leading global Certificate Authority for secure e-business transactions. Geotrust's patented smart seal technology provides fast, reliable and user-friendly web site identity authentication, and instant proof to your customers that your site can be trusted.
Smart Seals are dynamically-generated when someone accesses your site, and display a live time and date stamp and/or your company name. Users can click on a site seal to display additional verification information.
The QuickSSL Seal is a static image that conveys you are using GeoTrust technology to secure your site. It does not have any dynamically generated information, and is not 'clickable' for additional verification.
